I have been feeding Hiform Equisoy for ages now, along with a host of other Hiform products, and although they are great and my horse looks wonderful, they are rather expensive and somewhat hard to get 'in a hurry'. Ordering online is fine, but when you add postage, well, up goes the cost.

My feed store can try to stock it, but I wondered if now was a good time to try something else?

Am considering trying Prydes ProPak (LT Soy) instead of Equisoy for a start. Has anyone tried this or compared it to Equisoy?

Thanks in advance!

Anyway, just a few photo's of my tb gelding, Hugo, who has gone and gotten himself a hock spur and arthritis at the tender age of 8, not sure what his ridden future will be like, as he is still unsound in the paddock 3 months after diagnosis and after a course of pentosan, bute etc. He also contracted a nasty joint infection from the diagnostic nerve block, so things aren't real good for either of us at the moment :(

He finished racing in October last year as a 7 year old, spelled for 6 months and I brought him into work around April this year. He was going beautifully, has the best brain of any horse I've worked with, super paces and just the most fabulous attitude to work.

A couple of months under saddle, he'd also just come in from a one month spell, this was his 3rd ride. Only days before he went lame.

And his blown out leg, 1 1/2 weeks into treating him with strong anti-biotics for the joint infection :(

A bit of background information on my poor boy - he finished racing last October as a 7 year old, after 32 starts of flat racing. I purchased him, gave him a 6 month spell and brought him into light work around April this year.
Hugo has been the most wonderful horse I have owned. I looked for 2 years to find a horse that was suitable, and after having a few ottbs I was sure that I didn't want another one, and was specifically looking at warmbloods, friesian x's or andalusian x's.
Well, Hugo came up for sale, I saw his add and he was built like a brick outhouse, 16.2hh, dapple grey and you could not pick him as a TB by any means. He was dead quiet, had a brilliant brain and SUPER movement with the most beautiful knee and hock elevation and a very big, expressive canter. Threw a saddle on him, and he took to it like a duck to water. Vet check, no problems, sounds as a bell.

He came into work beautifully, only soundness problem was a hoof abscess. He had even been offering snippets of piaffe when we started working on shoulder and hind quarters control exercises. Just a beautiful horse all round, couldn't have been happier with him!

I gave him a month off over mid May/June, and brought him back in at the end of June, with very light arena work. The first few days he was lovely, albeit a little slow behind, but I put it down to lack of fitness.
Soon he started humping, and this turned into full blown bucking, running sideways and just being a general horror head. VERY unlike this horse, he sulks if you growl at him!
Could not find a sore spot anywhere, no lameness, had teeth/back/saddle/feet done, equissage and massage and a few more days off. No lameness still, but very grumpy under saddle. Started lunging him a little and after a couple of weeks, he started 'hopping' in trot and canter, which started to become more acute in the right hind.

Ran him down to the vets, where they did nerve blocks and xrays on him, confirming that he had a hock spur and arthritis in one of the lower hock joints.
He was put on a course of Pentosan (1/week for 4 weeks) and I was told that the only way he's going to come good is if the joint fuses, so to keep him moving under saddle, but don't push him through pain, the pentosan will keep him comfortable enough for light under saddle work.

No way was that horse going to be ridden, the pentosan did NOTHING for him, if anything he got worse. Then as luck would have it, his leg blew up one morning to over twice the size it should have been, and he was absolutely crippled and had a temperature. Vet out again, sure enough, joint infection from the nerve block!!

So we had a strong course of antibiotics, poulticing, bute, and cold therapy to try and get rid of that. Even almost 2 months later, it is intermittently blowing up :(

I was told that surgical or chemical fusion would not be an option for him, because the joint space was now too small and after the infection, it would be too much of a risk. He has been given until January for the joint to 'resolve itself', in which case we will be taken more xrays. If it hasn't, then we'll have to start thinking some not so nice thoughts :( He will be 9 in november and seeing as he hasn't competed yet, let alone got out of prelim, there would not be a great deal of purpose in giving him regular, long term, expensive treatments to keep him sound as a pleasure/prelim horse. I also cannot afford to do that, being full time uni with little income :(

It was has been 3 months now, he is still very stiff and sore, is on paddock rest as there is no way he can be ridden. I laid across his back the other day and he almost fell over, and no I'm not huge

Currently, he is on msm, ACV, has a magnetic hock boot and is in a 6acre paddock 24/7 to keep his movement up. Yet still so lame. He is the type of horse that loves to work, I can't bring myself to try to keep him paddock sound for the sake of having him around, if he won't be able to work anymore, as he loses condition, gets depressed etc. when he just stands around in a paddock all day! He is one of those horses that loves to please, and thrives off learning new challenges.

So my question, after an enormous introduction (sorry!!) - has anyone dealt with the same, or similar issue, what was the prognosis, what is the horse doing now, and how did you treat it?

Hi everyone,
I was a member here a few years ago now, but started uni and never got to come back on!

I'm Kayty, I am 19 and live in the Adelaide Hills, SA. I've been riding since I was 4, and have been in love with dressage since I was 14. Since then, I have had a few jobs working for trainers and dealers, being the 'test pilot' for horses to sell, I also work a few horses for various people, mainly breakers or greenies, give a few lessons here and there, and try to compete when I can! I have always had a habit of buying horses that I feel sorry for, 'fixing' them and selling them on. I leased a medium level mare last year who led me to becoming a member of the SA YR dressage Squad 2010. This year I purchased another ottb, who is by far, the best horse I have owned, I looked for 2 years to find one like him and he often fools people into thinking he is a wb :D Unfortunately, my lovely boy has been diagnosed with a hock spur and arthritis, and we are now facing some not so nice choices :(

I'm a full time uni student currently studying environmental management, but looking to change into a bachelor of science in 2011 :) I've also got my own pet portraiture business, which I started at 15 and have now started selling me work over seas :D

Thats enough about me, I'm rambling, my apologies! Looking forward to getting back into the forum :)

Sand? Rubber? Soiltex?
I am thinking of adding some sand, hoping that it will mix with the wood chip to create a surface that blends the propoerties of each. I hope it will be less slippery than woodchip alone, and less glary/dusty and blowy than sand alone.
Thanks for sharing your experience...
I decided to become a casual bus driver with BCC Transport and spend the extra hours available to me in working and improving our property so as to become more self sufficient.
One of the best things I have ever done!
To those of you who may be bothered if your bus may run a little late at times due to circumstances which can include traffic snarls, please share a thought for our Chinese counterparts.
A traffic jam has been reported in China this week due to roadworks. To date it has lasted ten days and there is the possibility it may take another three weeks to clear. I kid you not:eek:
